To give your photos more 'pop' try including both foreground and background subjects. This allows the viewer to travel through your photograph.

Also try to include bright colors, (a field of flowers), or wide contrasts, (a dark subject on a bright white snow field).
Blur of Color
Sometimes having the main subject in focus and the background out of focus can be very interesting. This concentrates the viewer on your subject.
This can work when taking photos of people, or things just as well.

The fun part of photography is trying different things, so experiment. With digital photography we now can try new things and our only cost, (after buying the camera), is time.
